Scribes on Screens: Movies And Shows About Writers

I grew up watching Murder She Wrote, West Wing, Sex and The City and I was fascinated by the fact that these characters made writing into their lives (ok, yes, West Wing is about politics, but the character I most wanted to be was Danny, the journalist – to the point that I majored in English and minored in Poli-Sci).

Writers generally don’t get to be the main character, but there are some good movies and shows about writers out there.  If you’re procrastinating, watch some of these to feel inspired again.

TV Shows About Writers

Murder, She Wrote

This classic show is amazing.  Murder-mystery author Jessica Fletcher, played by the iconic Angela Lansbury, uses her knowledge about criminals, developed through her writing, to solve cases in her hometown.  As capsule episodes, you can watch leisurely without worrying about remembering what happened previously.

Sex And The City

Did any of us not dream of being a journalist living the glam life in New York City? Sure, Carrie Bradshaw’s budget was…impossible (the girl spent WAY too much on shoes, but who can blame her?), but the tight friendships, the whirlwind of amazing events, and the thrill of being a famous writer…it’s hard to resist.

Castle

Another show about a mystery novelist making a nuisance of himself to the local police, Nthan Fillion is amazing (as always) and brings humor to the storylines.  I think anyone who writes mysteries (or really anyone who writes books) dreams of writing so well that you’re hailed as an expert in the subject matter.

Movies About Writers

The Help

Words can entertain, but sometimes it’s nice to remember that words can also lead to change.  In The Help, Skeeter writes the untold stories of black maids during the Civil Rights movement in the Deep South, shining a light on the injustices they endured.  The movie is amazing (although of course the book is better), and Octavia Spencer really shines as Minny.

Limitless

Ok, this movie isn’t one we should strive to emulate…but it’s tempting.  Eddie, played by Bradley Cooper (who I love!) is a struggling writer until he begins taking a little pill that “unlocks” his brain.  When we’re faced with writers’ block, I think we all wish the solution was that easy!

The Dead Poets Society

No list is complete without this flick, which was one of Robin Williams’ best pieces ever.  The power of words helps bring repressed students out of their shells, and ultimately leads to rebellion against an overly controlling school administration.  It’s a beautiful, touching movie.

Being a writer can be lonely, it can be draining, and it can be depressing at times.  However, part of being a writer is knowing the power of a good story – and watching a good story might be just the thing you need to remember why you sit at the computer every day and type.
